About The Artist

Marie-Louise Brulatour Mills, started drawing at 8 years old when she presented a drawing of Hopalong Cassady to her parents in her native Manhattan home. Her interest in horses culminated in being number three in America in A.H.S.A. high score awards, and her art peaked in receiving the Prix de Petrarque in Paris. Her love of history, Medieval in particular, is the cornerstone of her new works, as she weaves historical themes as Frederick II, Stupor Mundi, or Venice and the Islamic World into her web of Memory and Illusion. "In my work I want to show the essence of the event, of the person, often by depicting specific events carved from memory and illusion. We are multi-layered, which gives depth, richness and color to our lives and those of others past and present. As we gain in present experience, we consider the past events. Historic fact like our own personal history requires reflection often introspection". While her richly layered often illusionary backdrops for her historic figures are intense and cerebral in historic content her watercolors are the immediate reaction to an event, animal or scene, which when seen together reflect the two aspects of the brain, left and right. "Memory and Illusion are the materials used to create our own personally hand printed interior fabric. It is the weaving of the horizonal warp thread, memory, into the vertical weft of illusion that construct the cloth, but it is the spiritual aspirations that give the rich color and textures".
